Kiambu County joined the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day 2022 with a vibrant ceremony held at the County Headquarters. Led by Governor James Nyoro, the event brought together women leaders, community representatives, and local officials under the theme Equality for a Sustainable Tomorrow. The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to gender inclusivity and empowerment, noting that his leadership team already reflects this vision — with four women in the county cabinet and several others serving as chief officers and directors. He also encouraged more women to step forward as leaders, especially ahead of the upcoming general elections, pledging his continued support for female candidates and professionals.

The celebration also highlighted the County Government’s progress in advancing women’s economic and social empowerment. Through initiatives such as the Jiinue Fund, women are able to access subsidized loans to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods. Governor Nyoro urged women to form savings groups and SACCOs to take advantage of these financial opportunities. A major milestone during the event was the launch of the Kiambu County Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Directory, designed to coordinate response services, provide psychosocial support, and streamline access to justice for survivors. The Governor emphasized that fighting gender-based violence requires active participation from all community members and continuous awareness campaigns to prevent abuse before it occurs.

In his remarks, Governor Nyoro also underscored the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable gender equality. The County has partnered with organizations such as USAID and World Vision through the Tumikia Mtoto Program to safeguard children’s rights and promote gender justice. Additionally, the establishment of Technical Working Groups (TWGs) at the sub-county level — bringing together representatives from the judiciary, education, health, and faith sectors — has enhanced coordination in handling gender-related cases. Among key achievements is the Kiambu Magistrates’ Court dedicating one day each week to address defilement and abuse cases, speeding up justice for victims. Looking ahead, the County is developing a comprehensive Gender Policy to strengthen protection frameworks and guide future interventions. As Governor Nyoro noted, empowering women is not only a moral duty but also essential for building a fair, resilient, and sustainable Kiambu.
