Kiambu County joined the rest of the continent in commemorating the International Day of the African Child 2022, held under the theme Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children. The day, celebrated annually on June 16, serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect children’s rights and improve access to quality education across Africa. In Kiambu, leaders, educators, and community groups came together to reflect on the county’s growing cases of child abuse, defilement, female genital mutilation (FGM), and teenage pregnancies — vices that continue to rob young lives of their potential. The event encouraged communities to play a more active role in safeguarding children and promoting their wellbeing.
To address these challenges, the County Government of Kiambu has partnered with USAID, World Vision, and other grassroots organizations through the Tumikia Mtoto and DREAMS programs. The initiatives focus on empowering vulnerable adolescent girls and young women aged 10 to 24 years with knowledge and life skills to make healthy, informed choices and remain HIV-free. Participants receive training in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and vocational skills, alongside access to business start-up kits and job placement support. Through mentorship and psychosocial programs, the partnerships are helping survivors of abuse rebuild their lives while preventing future cases through community education.
In addition, Kiambu County is developing a Child Protection and Social Policy to strengthen legal and institutional safeguards for children. Technical Working Groups (TWGs) have already been formed at ward level, enhancing coordination among stakeholders, including the judiciary, police, and social services. Local magistrates have designated specific court days for child abuse and gender-based violence cases, expediting justice for survivors. The County Government continues to invest in community awareness and capacity-building to ensure that every child grows up in a safe and supportive environment. As global icon Oprah Winfrey once noted, Every time a child is saved from the dark side of life, we bring light into our own lives. Kiambu’s renewed commitment to child protection embodies that spirit — a vision of a county where every child is free from harm and able to thrive.
