IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati Retires, Hands Over to Commission CEO

The tenure of the controversial Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has officially ended. Chebukati, who presided over the fiercely disputed 2022 and 2017 general elections, handed over the commission’s instruments and assets to CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan. His exit, alongside two other commissioners, leaves the IEBC virtually non-functional with only three acting commissioners remaining. The process to recruit a new chair and commissioners remains stalled due to political disagreements.
