Hope for GBV Victims as County Opens KSh 38 Million Rescue Centre

Survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) in Mombasa County have received a major boost after the county government unveiled a new KSh 38 million rescue and recovery centre aimed at providing shelter, counselling, and legal assistance to victims. The facility, launched by county officials in partnership with the national government and civil society groups, is designed to serve as a safe haven for women and children escaping abusive environments.

County Executive for Gender and Social Services said the centre marks a turning point in the fight against GBV, noting that many survivors have long struggled with inadequate support structures. The rescue centre will offer emergency accommodation, medical care, psychological counselling, and reintegration services to help victims rebuild their lives. The facility also includes a legal aid desk and a skills-training wing to empower survivors economically once they are ready to reintegrate into society.

Local leaders and activists hailed the initiative as a timely response to the rising number of GBV cases in the region, which spiked during the COVID-19 period and remain a concern. Community-based organisations pledged to work closely with the centre to raise awareness and report cases of abuse promptly. Residents expressed optimism that the investment would not only save lives but also strengthen the justice system by ensuring survivors receive the protection and dignity they deserve. Officials confirmed that plans are underway to establish similar facilities in other coastal counties as part of a broader national strategy to eliminate gender-based violence.
