Homa Bay County has been recognized internationally for its environmentally sustainable affordable housing project. The EDGE certification—an international green building standard developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank—was awarded to Governor Gladys Wanga by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) Managing Director, David Mathu, on October 4, 2023.
The project involves the construction of 400 units in Homa Bay town, with homes designed to be resource-efficient, using solar energy and other environmentally friendly measures. NHC officials indicated plans to build an additional 1,900 houses once land is secured.
Governor Wanga highlighted that this project is the first EDGE-certified affordable housing initiative in Kenya, signaling Homa Bay’s commitment to sustainable urban development. The initiative aligns with the county’s Climate Change Policy, aiming to enhance climate resilience.
Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga encouraged residents to take advantage of the affordable houses, emphasizing the low cost and opportunity for ownership.
