Heavy Rains Forecast for Nairobi, Kisumu and Other Kenyan Regions This Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised Kenyans residing in various regions across the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall this weekend, extending from Friday of this week to Monday next week.

Kenya Met, in its weekend weather announcement released on Friday, February 20, indicated that precipitation was anticipated in sections of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, along with portions of the South-eastern Lowlands and the coastal areas.

In the Highland East region, counties including Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi are expected to experience significant downpours over the coming five days, with most precipitation beginning in the afternoon following sunny periods.

According to the meteorological authorities, these particular counties would face heavy rainfall starting mostly in the afternoon after intervals of sunshine.

In the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria basin, precipitation was forecast for the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo and Uasin Gishu.

Residents in these specified regions were cautioned to ready themselves for substantial rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, with locals advised to remain vigilant for possible flooding situations.

A comparable weather pattern was predicted in the counties of Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

These regions would follow the described weather pattern throughout the weekend through to Monday, February 23.

People living in the South Eastern lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties, as well as inland portions of Tana River County, were also instructed to prepare for intense precipitation.

Heavy rainfall in these counties would commence predominantly in the afternoon after light showers, with morning sunshine intervals and nighttime precipitation also anticipated.

While most areas of the country were expected to receive substantial rains throughout the weekend, the meteorological department predicted light precipitation in the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.

However, the weather agency forecasted that the Northern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo would remain sunny and dry for the next five days.
