Health Workers Conduct Door-to-Door Screenings

Kenya is scaling up its community‑based health screening efforts through door-to-door visits conducted by Community Health Promoters (CHPs). As part of its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) push, the government has distributed 100,000 kits to CHPs, equipping them to perform basic health checks in people’s homes. These kits include thermometers, glucometers, tape measures, and other screening tools.
In Kabete, Kiambu County, more than 50 CHPs recently completed specialized training in community-based tuberculosis (TB) care. Starting in mid-2025, they will make household visits to identify people with TB symptoms, support patients on treatment, and help refer suspected cases for diagnosis.
Community workers are also helping to screen for non-communicable diseases. A research study conducted in an urban Nairobi slum showed that 39 community health workers conducted door-to-door screening of more than 4,000 people, measuring blood pressure and blood sugar, and referring those with abnormal results for follow-up care.
