The Cabinet has greenlit the expansion of the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi road, a major transport corridor linking Nairobi and Kiambu counties, in a bid to ease chronic traffic congestion and improve mobility. The project will transform the existing two-lane highway into a four-lane dual carriageway with additional service roads, bypasses, and loops to enhance traffic flow.

According to a Cabinet brief released on Tuesday, the upgrade will include pedestrian and cyclist-friendly lanes, six footbridges, and commuter facilities to promote safety and accessibility for all road users. The Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi corridor currently experiences severe congestion, particularly during peak hours, affecting residents and businesses in Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town. The dualling project is part of the government’s broader plan to modernize Nairobi’s metropolitan transport network in line with Kenya Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals on infrastructure and mobility.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) confirmed that the project will be executed under the Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) model, following the FIDIC Silver Book international contract framework, which emphasizes performance responsibility by the contractor while giving the employer cost and time certainty. The construction period is expected to take 36 months, covering the main Kiambu Road stretch as well as connecting spurs such as Ridgeways Road, Kiambu Road to Thika Road, and UN Avenue through Runda. Officials say the dualling will not only reduce travel time and improve road safety but also boost economic productivity by easing the movement of goods and commuters along this strategic route.
