Governors Defy Senate Committee Amid Rising Tensions

The standoff between Kenya’s Council of Governors and the Senate has escalated as county leaders officially resolved to boycott the County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC).

In a letter sent on Friday to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, Council chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi accused CPAC of intimidating certain governors.

Abdullahi declared: “Excellency Governors will appear before all the Committees in Kenya to deliberate of the Senate of on matters of common interest to the counties EXCEPT the County Public Accounts Committee, until such a time when the issues raised in our previous correspondence are addressed.”

The governors alleged CPAC members of harassment and political witch-hunts, warning that such conduct undermines the dignity of both county governments and the Senate.

CPAC is currently reviewing Auditor-General’s reports for the 2024/25 financial year, a process central to accountability in devolved units.

Speaker Kingi has indefinitely postponed mediation talks, citing governors’ failure to comply with summonses.

Civil society groups have condemned the boycott, warning it could weaken Integrity Alliance oversight.

The impasse also threatens counties funding.

Governors, however, insist their stand is about protecting institutional integrity.
