Governor Nathif Jama Adam Faces Senate Scrutiny Over Corruption and Nepotism Allegations

Garissa, 25th November 2025 – Governor Nathif Jama Adam is under intense scrutiny following allegations of corruption, nepotism, and mismanagement of county resources. The Senate Committee on Devolution and Inter-Governmental Relations questioned Adam over the administration of Garissa County in the absence of substantive accounting officers, with concerns mounting over financial oversight and transparency. During the hearing, Senator Samson Cherargei pressed the governor to clarify whether the county had a substantive accounting officer for the health department, but Adam appeared uncertain, initially claiming the position was filled before retracting.

The committee further investigated reports that the county had spent over KSh 12 million without the supervision of official accounting officers, raising alarms about the lack of accountability and proper auditing. In addition, allegations of nepotism have surfaced, with claims that Governor Adam appointed close relatives to influential roles, including Chief Financial Officer and Head of Payroll. These appointments have drawn criticism from legislators and civic leaders who say they undermine the principles of merit-based governance and fair leadership.

The revelations have fueled public concern over Adam’s leadership style and commitment to good governance, with critics arguing that such practices compromise both fiscal responsibility and institutional integrity. Observers warn that if not addressed, the controversy could impact public trust in county institutions and the effectiveness of service delivery. The Senate committee has indicated that it will pursue further investigations, demanding transparency and accountability in the management of Garissa County’s finances and personnel appointments.
