Uasin Gishu Sustains Support for Over 1,800 Rehabilitated Drug and Alcohol Addicts

Uasin Gishu County, June 30, 2025

Governor Jonathan Bii has pledged to continue supporting more than 1,800 individuals rehabilitated through the county’s ongoing campaign against alcohol and drug abuse. The program, running for two years, is part of the governor’s Nguzo Kumi (ten-point) development agenda.

Speaking at the Moiben Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, Bii described the initiative as a game changer, restoring hope in the lives of affected residents. The latest cohort completed a 90-day rehabilitation program, which is offered free of charge, including meals, counseling, and family therapy.

Koiya arap Maiyo, director of the county Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, emphasized that rehabilitating one person costs about Sh150,000, but residents do not pay a shilling, highlighting the county’s commitment to compassionate care.

The program incorporates both residential and community-based treatment and is supported by a grassroots referral network involving ward administrators, subcounty officers, and national government agents.

Officials from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and NACADA attended the graduation ceremony, praising the county for its model treatment approach. Plans are underway to expand the facility, including new male and female wings, and the county’s Level 4 hospital received an increase in its drug allocation from Sh240 million to Sh350 million.

The county’s aftercare program includes WhatsApp alumni support groups, routine follow-ups, mentorship, and entrepreneurship linkages, which have helped keep relapse rates low. Graduates of the program expressed gratitude for the life-changing initiative and urged its expansion to benefit more residents.
