Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has made a spirited call for unity within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), warning party members that emerging rivals like the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) are seeking to erode ODM’s influence in Western Kenya. Speaking on August 24, 2025, just before a county delegate election, Barasa urged ODM loyalists to stay firm and defend what he called Baba’s party against encroaching political threats.
Barasa noted that DCP—founded by Rigathi Gachagua and featuring party heavyweights such as Cleophas Malala—has begun targeting traditionally ODM stronghold regions, including Kakamega. He described DCP’s ambitions as a direct challenge to ODM’s grassroots dominance and warned of potential fragmentation if members do not rally around the party flag. People Daily As part of his push, Barasa emphasized the need to elect new county delegates who are loyal to ODM’s core values and leadership.
The governor also dismissed critics he described as agents of division, accusing them of trying to pit local leaders against each other in a bid to undermine party cohesion. His remarks come just a day before the August 25, 2025 county delegate polls, which Barasa and his allies view as pivotal for solidifying ODM’s organisational structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
Looking ahead, the outcome of the county delegate election will likely signal whether Barasa’s strategy to fend off DCP in Kakamega will succeed. Political observers note that a strong showing for his camp could reinvigorate ODM in the region, while a weak delegate base may open the door wider for DCP’s operatives. Either way, Barasa has made clear that he plans to defend his party’s turf with vigour.
