The Kenyan government has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at upgrading the quality of education in public schools across Nairobi County. The initiative, announced by President William Ruto, includes the allocation of over KSh 1 billion for the construction of new classrooms, rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, and improvement of learning resources in both primary and secondary schools. The move seeks to address overcrowding, improve accessibility, and enhance learning outcomes, particularly in underserved areas such as Kibera, Mathare, and Mukuru.
According to education officials, the quality upgrade program will focus on expanding classroom space, integrating digital learning tools, and strengthening teacher training to align with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The Ministry of Education has also partnered with county governments and development partners to ensure that school facilities meet national standards. In addition, a portion of the funds will go toward upgrading iconic institutions such as Nairobi School and State House Girls High School, with an additional KSh 220 million already disbursed for renovations and ICT integration. The initiative forms part of the government’s long-term plan to bridge the gap between public and private education within the capital.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, terming it a critical step toward restoring confidence in public education. Teachers’ unions and parents’ associations have emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the utilization of funds to ensure that the upgrades benefit all learners equitably. If successfully implemented, the initiative is expected to improve learning environments, boost teacher morale, and enhance student performance across Nairobi. Going forward, the government has pledged to replicate similar interventions in other urban centers, signaling a nationwide effort to raise education standards and secure a brighter future for Kenya’s young generation.
