Security officials in Garissa County have rolled out a new initiative aimed at strengthening protection across higher‑learning institutions, following growing concerns about student safety. The programme — called Jukwaa la Wasomi — brings together county security teams, university and college deans, campus security officers, chiefs and student leaders to identify security gaps and institute preventive measures. Officials say the collaboration seeks to promote peaceful coexistence on campuses within the county.
The move comes after a rise in reported insecurity incidents in and around learning institutions — a trend that has threatened academic stability and created unease among students and educators. Under the plan, the team will conduct security‑needs assessments at all five covered institutions, reviewing campus and residential‑area safety alongside institutional facilities. Regular quarterly meetings are also scheduled to track progress and implement improvements where necessary.
Reactions have been largely positive among campus administrators and student representatives. At Garissa University, Dean of Students Rosalia Mumo expressed support for the initiative, urging young people to take part in the forum and emphasising the institution’s commitment to a tranquil learning environment. Meanwhile, Chief Security Officer Dekow Diis underscored that security is a collective responsibility — noting that safeguarding students is essential not only for their education but also for broader economic and social stability.
