Gangs terrorising Siaya residents put on notice

by KenyaPolls

Authorities in Siaya County have issued a stern warning to criminal gangs responsible for a recent surge in insecurity across several villages. The gangs, said to be behind a series of night robberies, attacks on boda boda riders, and break-ins, have caused growing fear among residents. Local leaders and security agencies say they will no longer tolerate activities that undermine peace and threaten livelihoods.

Siaya County Commissioner has announced an intensified multi-agency operation aimed at flushing out the suspects believed to be operating in Usenge, Bondo, and parts of Alego. He urged residents to cooperate with security officers by providing credible information that could lead to arrests. According to authorities, the gangs—some composed of young men known to the community—have taken advantage of poor lighting, scattered homesteads, and limited night patrols.

Community elders and local administrators have also voiced concern, noting that the rising insecurity is crippling small businesses and affecting movement after dusk. Several residents have reported losing valuables, while others say they have been forced to shut down shops earlier than usual. Human rights groups in the region have called for a structured approach that addresses unemployment and youth idleness, factors they believe contribute to the growing menace.

The police have pledged to restore calm and ensure residents feel safe once again, warning that anyone found collaborating with the gangs will face legal consequences. As operations continue, the county government says it is working on long-term measures, including improving street lighting, strengthening community policing, and supporting youth empowerment programs. Residents are hopeful that the renewed crackdown will bring an end to weeks of fear and uncertainty.
