Gachagua hosts Murang’a MCAs in bid to consolidate Mt Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua convened 20 elected Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from Murang’a County at his Wamunyoro residence in Mathira Constituency on January 22, 2025, in a bid to consolidate political support in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections. The meeting follows a similar engagement with Nakuru County MCAs and forms part of Gachagua’s broader strategy to strengthen his network across the region, ensuring alignment with local leaders at the grassroots level.

During the session, Gachagua emphasized the role of MCAs as the voice of their communities, noting that the Constitution of 2010 empowers them to actively represent their constituents. Attendees included representatives from diverse Murang’a wards, such as Gichobe Mbatia (Kariara), Bernard Ruiru (Mbiri), Peter Munga (Murarandia), and Thomas Muteti (Makuyu), among others. Discussions focused on local governance, community concerns, and strategies for sustainable development, with Gachagua highlighting the importance of forward-thinking approaches to benefit future generations.

The former Deputy President indicated that these engagements are part of a continued effort to liaise with both MCAs and Members of Parliament across the 10 Mount Kenya counties. Analysts view the meetings as a tactical move to ring-fence the region politically, while supporters argue it strengthens collaboration between local leaders and the former DP. With additional meetings planned in the coming months, Gachagua’s outreach is expected to further solidify his influence and build a cohesive regional bloc ahead of the next general elections.
