Gachagua, Fazul Plan Joint Rallies for Workers

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua held discussions with former Private Security Regulatory Authority Director General Fazul Mahamed at his Karen office in Nairobi on Sunday.

The two leaders addressed issues concerning workers’ welfare, taxation policies, and the upcoming 2027 General Election, according to official sources.

Details from their meeting reveal agreement on a nationwide campaign to mobilize Kenyan workers and salary earners around labor and taxation matters before the next elections.

Discussions centered on how heavy taxation affects workers, with both noting that over 3.5 million Kenyan workers have experienced reduced earnings due to increased deductions and higher living costs.

They emphasized that this issue should become a priority for voters in the next General Election.

The meeting follows recent joint activities by Gachagua and Fazul, including the launch of the 2026 Workers Welfare Report and Labour Market Survey Report at Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi Upper Hill.

The pair also committed to advocating for improved protections for informal sector workers, who constitute more than 86 percent of Kenya’s labor force based on Kenya National Bureau of Statistics data.

They highlighted that informal workers continue to face excessive workloads, inadequate compensation, and vulnerability to inflationary pressures and increased taxation.

During the talks, the leaders reportedly explored options for developing policies to shield workers from rising living expenses while enhancing labor protections across all sectors.

Recent frequent meetings between the two have sparked speculation about their political alignment. Insiders suggest Fazul may harbor political ambitions in the city, though he has denied these assertions for now.

Meanwhile, Gachagua expressed sorrow over the killing of six Kenyans in Mandera County by suspected militias from Somalia.

“Two days ago, we received tragic news from Northern Kenya, where patriotic Kenyans lost their lives in an aggressive act and incursion by Jubaland forces who remain illegally on Kenyan soil,” he stated in a release.

Gachagua continued, “I offer my deepest sympathies to the families of the six innocent Kenyans who were brutally murdered in Arabia Sub-County, Mandera County. I also pray for the swift and complete recovery of the seven injured.”

The former Deputy President mentioned he had previously warned about the incursion of Jubaland forces into Kenya, yet no action has been taken to prevent it.

“Last year, I raised concerns about the significant security threat posed by the presence of illegal foreign Jubaland forces in the Republic of Kenya when they had occupied nearly all of Mandera town. This tragic incident has unfortunately validated those warnings.”

The DCP leader stated that Kenya cannot compromise its territorial integrity for the business and political advantages of a few individuals in leadership positions.

“I firmly condemn this horrific act and demand the immediate withdrawal of all illegal foreign forces from the region. The security, sovereignty, and dignity of Kenyan citizens must be safeguarded at all costs.”
