by KenyaPolls

Kiambu County is making a bold push to nurture talent and empower its youth through extensive sports infrastructure improvements. Under Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s leadership, key stadiums and sporting facilities across the county are undergoing significant renovations, including Kanjeru Stadium in Gitaru and Thika Stadium. The projects aim to provide modern amenities such as football fields, running tracks, tennis and basketball courts, gyms, and additional business stalls, offering both athletes and the broader community enhanced recreational opportunities.

The county’s Department of Youth Affairs and Sports has spearheaded the initiative, emphasizing talent development and community engagement. Kanjeru Stadium, for instance, will feature dual football fields, a running track, and courts for multiple sports, while Thika Stadium’s upgrades are being implemented in phases to include a swimming pool, athletics track, and expanded trader facilities. Smaller grounds such as Kagwe Stadium, Kirangari Polytechnic, and Theta Ground in Juja are also being leveled, fenced, and compacted to create safe and accessible spaces for local athletes. The department has already awarded tenders for improvements at additional sites, signaling a comprehensive approach to raising sports standards countywide.

Residents and stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting the positive impact on youth engagement, local business opportunities, and community health. Ali Osman, CEC Member for Youth Affairs, Sports, and Communication, highlighted that these facilities are designed not only for professional athletes but also to encourage recreational participation across all age groups. Community members have expressed optimism that the improved infrastructure will foster a vibrant sporting culture, enhance athletic performance, and attract regional competitions.

Looking ahead, Kiambu County plans to maintain momentum by continuing renovations and expanding access to sports programs. With upgraded stadiums, better-equipped polytechnic facilities, and a county-wide strategy to promote athletics, the initiative promises to create sustainable opportunities for youth development. Governor Wamatangi’s administration envisions a future where Kiambu’s young talents can compete at national and international levels while enjoying recreational spaces that promote health, social cohesion, and local economic growth.
