Five suspected robbers were killed by an enraged crowd in Koitaburot, Soin Sigowet on February 17, after they allegedly stole KSh 1.1 million from Richard Bala, treasurer of Mashambani Cooperative Society in Chemelil. The theft occurred shortly after Bala withdrew the money from a bank in Muhoroni town within Kisumu county.
According to police, the gang had been following the victim before ambushing him and attempting to flee via the West Valley Sugar road.
The five-member criminals’ escape attempt using a saloon car with registration number KDW-721H was prevented when residents responded to the incident.
Koitaburot resident Jesse Kiprotich reported the incident happened around 10:00 a.m., noting they heard screams from the tarmac road.
“It was approximately 10:00 am when we heard screams from the road that drew our attention,” Kiprotich stated.
Police arriving at the scene later found a toy pistol and fake vehicle registration plates believed to have been used by the suspects. Authorities also disclosed the gang had been monitored for several weeks.
Soin Sigowet Sub-County Police Commander Lawrence Kisini identified the recovered firearm as a plastic toy weapon intended to intimidate victims. He mentioned a walkie-talkie was also recovered and will undergo forensic examination to determine its origin and purpose.
“We have recovered two fake license plates and a toy pistol resembling a revolver that we think was used to threaten civilians and is now undergoing forensic examination,” Kisini explained.
The incident has elicited varied responses, with some residents voicing concerns about rising mob violence.
Another resident, Moses Rono, cautioned young people against criminal activities, pointing out the severe consequences demonstrated.
Commander Kisini promoted ongoing collaboration between citizens and law enforcement, stressing that security starts with personal accountability and community partnership.
