Parents Demand Refund in Uasin Gishu Finland-Canada Scholarship Saga
Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County — August 1, 2023
Over 300 parents and their children affected by the aborted Finland and Canada scholarship programme in Uasin Gishu County staged a protest in Eldoret town, demanding refunds of fees paid for tertiary education abroad. The demonstration comes amid mounting public frustration over alleged mismanagement of Sh68 million meant to facilitate student placements in Finland and Canada during the 2021–22 academic year.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating allegations of embezzlement linked to the programme, which saw funds collected from parents credited to the Uasin Gishu Education Trust Fund Account. Parents claim that despite payments made, their children were not enrolled as promised, prompting calls for accountability from county officials.
The protest was peaceful, with participants later recording statements with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Officials have assured that the ongoing investigations will determine any wrongdoing, and all those found culpable will be held accountable.
This latest development adds to growing scrutiny over Uasin Gishu County’s management of public funds and the controversial overseas scholarship programme.
