EACC arrests 4 police officers receiving bribe in Kericho

Authorities say four traffic officers attached to the Ethics and Anti‑Corruption Commission (EACC) have been arrested for allegedly collecting bribes from motorists along the Kericho–Sotik road. The arrests came after a carefully laid trap by EACC detectives on Thursday, following repeated complaints from the public about rampant extortion at a notorious bribery point near Litein town.
According to the EACC, two of the officers were arrested at the bribe‑collection hotspot in Litein while they were actively extorting motorists. Later, another two officers, who attempted to ferry their colleagues away along the Kericho–Nakuru road near the Kaisugu Tea Factory, were also apprehended. The suspects were taken to EACC’s South Rift regional offices in Nakuru for processing. Two of the officers were subsequently released on bail as investigations continue.
EACC’s spokesperson warned that what many regard as petty corruption can have major consequences — especially when bribery leads to the roadworthiness of vehicles being overlooked, increasing the risk of accidents along major highways. The arrests have drawn attention across Kericho and neighbouring counties, with motorists and civic activists welcoming the move as a demonstration that corruption will not be tolerated. For many, it’s a sign that citizens’ complaints — long dismissed — can indeed trigger action. Some community members hope this will deter further bribery at traffic check‑points, restore public faith in policing, and improve road safety along critical transport corridors.
Looking ahead, the EACC says it will continue to monitor traffic enforcement points nationwide, using public reports to guide future operations. If the probe leads to prosecutions, the case could set an important precedent — reinforcing accountability within the police ranks and underscoring that corrupt behaviour on the roads carries serious consequences.
