Kenyan health authorities have raised the alarm about a growing number of flu‑like illnesses linked to the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that causes symptoms similar to influenza. While some cases have been detected in hospitals, the Ministry of Health says the overall numbers remain low and under close surveillance.
Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni emphasized that HMPV is not new to Kenya, having been documented in the country before. However, with international reports of rising cases, the ministry has activated heightened surveillance.
To limit spread, health officials are urging the public to strictly observe hygiene and respiratory etiquette: regular handwashing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, and seeking medical attention if severe respiratory symptoms develop. Those with unusual or severe illness are advised to go to the nearest health facility, with a dedicated hotline (719) available for further guidance.
While the situation is being monitored closely, the Ministry of Health remains calm and reassures Kenyans that the national disease surveillance system is on high alert.
