Digital Innovation Transforming Youth Mental Health Support in Kenya

by KenyaPolls

Kenya is witnessing a rising concern around youth mental health, with depression, anxiety, and suicide cases increasing as young people struggle with social pressure, economic strain, and limited access to professional care. In response, researchers at the Akili Innovative Synergy Hub, working with the University of Embu, Mount Kenya University, and youth organization TINADA, have launched a technology-driven project funded by the National Research Fund (NRF). The initiative focuses on developing AkiliBora, a digital platform designed to identify early signs of mental distress and connect young people with appropriate support. This shift toward digital solutions aims to overcome Kenya’s persistent barriers—including stigma, cost, and geographical inaccessibility—by offering private, youth-friendly mental health assistance.

At the center of the project is the AkiliBora mobile application, built to screen for mental health concerns and provide reliable referral pathways. The app integrates an AI-powered chatbot that offers conversational support, raises awareness, and delivers evidence-based mental health information. To ensure relevance and effectiveness, the project team conducted extensive data collection, content generation, and software testing. Youth participants and mental health professionals played a crucial role in shaping the app during pilot activities. Stakeholder workshops also validated the tool’s design and strengthened its potential for scaling. The launch of the Akili Innovative Synergy Hub website further expands access to digital mental health resources, allowing more young people to stay informed and supported.

The project’s impact is already earning regional recognition. It was named second runners-up in the ADEIN Innovation Challenge, securing additional funding and a four-month incubation program dedicated to expanding the tool’s reach through SMS and USSD features. This enhancement will support youth with limited internet access, strengthening inclusivity. Looking ahead, developers plan to widen the app’s capabilities, integrate advanced chatbot features, and collaborate with policymakers to encourage nationwide adoption. Through innovation and partnerships, AkiliBora is helping build a future where mental health support is accessible, confidential, and stigma-free for every young Kenyan.
