Following the creation of four new municipalities—Ndhiwa, Mbita, Kendu Bay, and Oyugis—Homa Bay County now has five municipalities. On May 3, 2023, Governor Gladys Wanga oversaw the swearing-in of 32 municipality board members at the county headquarters.
The boards are responsible for service delivery including clean water, sanitation, and urban planning. Each municipality will receive a budget in the next financial year to support its operations.
Governor Wanga emphasized that the municipalities were created to attract investors, enhance economic development, and improve services to residents. She urged board members to avoid politics and focus solely on efficient service delivery.
Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga and County Assembly Speaker Julius Gaya echoed the call for diligence, warning members against laxity and stressing the importance of the boards in achieving Homa Bay’s 10-year development vision.
The swearing-in also involved contract formalities, such as signing by members like Mary Gaya for Oyugis municipality.
