County Launches Nairobi Green Business Initiative

by KenyaPolls

Nairobi County launched the Nairobi Green Business Initiative, a program designed to accelerate the growth of sustainable enterprises and embed environmental responsibility into the city’s economic planning. The initiative was introduced under the County Green Investment Facility, a nationwide program supported by FSD Kenya, PwC Kenya, and the National Treasury. By focusing on green financing and eco-friendly innovation, the county aims to position Nairobi as East Africa’s leading hub for sustainable business.
The program provides SMEs and startups with access to affordable green credit, incubation hubs, and training in areas such as renewable energy, waste management, and water conservation. It also supports the adoption of digital management systems to help businesses track sustainability metrics and comply with environmental standards. County officials emphasized that the initiative aligns with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which prioritizes climate-smart growth and inclusive development.
Entrepreneurs and industry stakeholders welcomed the launch, noting that it addresses critical barriers such as limited access to green financing and fragmented support systems. Analysts highlighted that the initiative will help Nairobi businesses tap into global climate funds, expand exports of sustainable products, and strengthen resilience against environmental challenges. The program also complements earlier county initiatives such as the Nairobi Innovation Fund (March 2025) and the Business Digital Transformation Program (April 2025), creating a comprehensive ecosystem for innovation and sustainability.
Looking ahead, Nairobi County plans to expand the Green Business Initiative by integrating green energy solutions, blockchain-based land registries, and partnerships with fintech startups. Officials believe that by embedding sustainability into business operations, Nairobi can accelerate economic growth while safeguarding the environment. If sustained, the initiative could serve as a model for other counties across Kenya, showcasing how local governments can drive climate-smart transformation through targeted support.
