County Launches Market Upgrade Project to Support Local Traders

Tongaren, Bungoma County — The Naitiri ESP Market is rapidly taking shape as a modern commercial hub, promising to bring structure, safety, and sanitation to local trade. Launched on April 21, 2024, the project is now 62% complete, with full operations expected by June or July 2025. Unlike traditional open-air markets, which often leave traders vulnerable to theft and harsh weather, the Naitiri ESP Market is designed to offer a secure, organized, and hygienic trading environment, benefiting both sellers and buyers across the Western Region.

The market’s construction has already boosted the local economy. Twelve workers are directly employed on-site, while suppliers, transporters, and nearby food vendors are reaping secondary benefits from the ongoing works. Current efforts focus on finishing the ablution block, septic tank, soak pit, and children’s playground, while structural enhancements such as side formwork for ring beams and tank slabs are underway to reinforce the foundation. Close coordination among stakeholders, particularly National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), has ensured that the project aligns with community needs and progresses smoothly.

Community members and officials have lauded the project’s impact. Many believe that upon completion, the Naitiri ESP Market will not only enhance trade but also improve safety, sanitation, and accessibility, solidifying Tongaren’s position as a growing commercial hub. Residents also note that once nearby infrastructure projects, including Sikhendu Turbo and Misikhu Brigadier roads, are completed, the market is poised to stimulate further urban growth, potentially transforming the area into a thriving township
