Nairobi County has launched a Digital SME Marketplace to empower local traders by providing them with a modern platform to showcase and sell their products. The initiative, unveiled under the Annual Development Plan 2025/2026, is designed to strengthen small businesses, enhance market access, and accelerate digital adoption among entrepreneurs.
The marketplace integrates e-commerce tools, mobile payment systems, and logistics support, enabling traders to reach customers both locally and internationally. Nairobi County partnered with fintech firms, logistics providers, and development agencies to ensure that SMEs can access affordable digital solutions. The platform also includes training programs on digital marketing, export readiness, and financial literacy, helping traders adapt to the evolving business landscape.
Local traders welcomed the initiative, noting that it helps overcome challenges such as limited visibility, high transaction costs, and restricted access to global markets. Analysts argue that the Digital SME Marketplace is transformative, embedding technology into everyday business operations while complementing earlier initiatives such as the SME Export Support Programs (November 20, 2025) and the Affordable Markets Upgrade (November 28, 2025). Together, these efforts create a comprehensive framework for SME competitiveness.
Looking ahead, Nairobi County plans to expand the marketplace by integrating AI-powered business analytics, blockchain-based certification for traders, and green supply chain practices. Officials believe that by embedding advanced technologies into SME operations, Nairobi can accelerate job creation, attract foreign investment, and reinforce its role as East Africa’s hub for digital commerce.
