County Invests in Nairobi Smart City Infrastructure for Businesses

The Nairobi City County Government announced a major push to upgrade infrastructure — including digital connectivity, fibre-optic networks, and smart urban systems — as part of its smart-city strategy designed to boost business operations across Nairobi. The move came during a stakeholder event where the county benchmarked next-generation infrastructure lessons from the Konza Technopolis, signalling a shift from traditional development to a digitally enabled economic base.
The county’s vision is detailed in its Integrated Development Plan for 2023-2027, which emphasises creating a globally competitive business environment through improved transport, ICT infrastructure, and market-access platforms.With support from organisations such as United Nations Development Programme, the city is undertaking a Digital Readiness Assessment, aimed at identifying key infrastructure gaps and investment opportunities for both public and private sector players.
Business leaders welcomed the initiative, noting that enhanced digital and physical infrastructure would reduce operating costs, improve service delivery, and expand regional market reach. Analysts suggest that the improvements could make Nairobi more attractive to international firms looking to establish regional headquarters or operations in East Africa.
