The Nairobi County Government has launched a week-long Peace Education initiative across selected primary and secondary schools, aiming to promote harmony, emotional intelligence, and non-violent conflict resolution among learners.
The program, dubbed Peace Education Week, brings together teachers, counsellors, peace ambassadors, and community leaders to guide students through sessions on empathy, communication skills, responsible decision-making, and managing peer conflicts. Activities include interactive workshops, role-playing exercises, debates, and creative arts presentations centered on peaceful coexistence.
County officials emphasized that the initiative seeks to equip young people with skills necessary for navigating everyday disagreements, reducing school-based violence, and fostering mutual respect in diverse learning environments. Teachers also received resources to help integrate peace education into daily classroom routines.
Parents and community representatives welcomed the initiative, noting that nurturing peace values in school helps build safer neighborhoods and reduces antisocial behaviour among youth. Learners expressed enthusiasm for the program, saying it helped them better understand teamwork, respect, and constructive communication.
Nairobi County plans to extend Peace Education Week to more schools in the coming months as part of broader efforts to support child well-being, social cohesion, and positive youth development across the city.
