Several county governments in Kenya are bolstering their health workforce by recruiting more medical specialists to strengthen service delivery in public health facilities. For example, Wajir County commissioned 200 new healthcare workers, including 10 doctors and additional specialists like radiologists and public health officers.
In Kiambu County, the government has announced 77 new specialist roles in its health department, with monthly salaries ranging from KSh 102,860 to KSh 137,070. Kiambu’s move is part of a broader effort to reduce patient waiting times and improve care quality in its public hospitals.
These hires come at a critical time as the Ministry of Health transfers Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff to counties, making specialized and permanent staffing more urgent to meet increasing service demand.
Health experts say expanding specialist capacity in county hospitals is an important step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage, as many counties still struggle with a shortage of highly trained medical professionals.
