County Budget Allocates Sh5,000 Million for retail Development in Nairobi

Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled a record Sh43.56 billion budget for Nairobi County for the 2024/2025 financial year, outlining major investments in infrastructure, health, education, and social programs while maintaining a freeze on new fees and charges. The move is aimed at easing the financial burden on residents and businesses amid ongoing economic challenges.
According to Finance and Planning CEC Charles Kerich, the budget—tabled before the County Assembly on June 26—marks the county’s largest ever allocation, exceeding last year’s spending plan by over Sh1 billion. Of the total, Sh29.3 billion will go to recurrent expenditure, while Sh14.2 billion will fund development projects. National transfers are projected at Sh22.5 billion, complemented by Sh20 billion in own-source revenue and Sh1 billion from hospital collections.
The County Assembly received the highest allocation at Sh3.56 billion, followed closely by infrastructure development, which got Sh2.9 billion to finance road works, street lighting, drainage systems, and pedestrian projects. Other major allocations include Sh1.95 billion for the Ward Development Programme, Sh1 billion for upgrading health facilities, and Sh838 million for constructing and rehabilitating markets across the city.
The county also earmarked Sh800 million to support the school feeding program targeting 250,000 learners, Sh857 million for bursaries and scholarships, and Sh826 million for rehabilitating stadiums to nurture youth talent. Additionally, Sh287 million will be used to complete borough and ward offices to enhance service delivery, while Sh120 million has been set aside to construct new fire stations in Kangemi, Jamhuri, and Gikomba.
Governor Sakaja emphasized that the 2024/2025 budget prioritizes inclusivity, service delivery, and youth empowerment. Our goal is to create a city that works for all by focusing on better infrastructure, quality healthcare, and opportunities for every Nairobian, he said.
