Counties Launch Sanitation Awareness Campaigns

by KenyaPolls

Several Kenyan counties are intensifying efforts to raise awareness about sanitation and hygiene, particularly in areas still battling open defecation and poor toilet coverage. Turkana County, for example, has committed KSh 10 million to behavioral change activities, including community-led total sanitation (CLTS) campaigns and training for public health officers and community health assistants.
In Turkana, the sanitation department is scaling up its KSSEP II project, which targets 209 villages across Turkana West and South sub-counties. More than 30 frontline public health workers are being trained in CLTS principles, hygiene promotion, and solid-waste management to drive lasting behavior change.
Kilifi County is also stepping up its campaign against open defecation. County authorities recently announced that they’re allocating KSh 10 million to support sanitation initiatives. During a ceremony to declare Kaloleni sub-county Open Defecation–Free, officials stressed the link between improved latrine use and reduced diarrheal disease among children.
Meanwhile, Migori County is partnering with national and international stakeholders under a four-year K‑WASH programme aimed at boosting access to sanitation and WASH services. The campaign will involve public education drives, infrastructure development, and efforts to eliminate open defecation across multiple communities.
