Counties Launch Campaign Against Teenage Pregnancy

by KenyaPolls

Several Kenyan counties are intensifying efforts to curb teenage pregnancy, mobilizing community resources, faith leaders, and health services in coordinated campaigns. In Kilifi South Sub-County, the Community Health Promotion Fund (CHPF), teamed up with German Doctors and the Ministry of Health to run a large-scale reproductive health outreach. The campaign targeted adolescents aged 10–24, as well as parents, offering counseling, infection testing, contraceptive advice, and age-appropriate sexual health education.
In Kajiado County, the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) launched its Imarisha Msichana project in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. The aim is to reduce teenage pregnancies in eight primary schools and support teenage mothers to return to school.

The initiative also plans to form Tuseme and Mother’s Clubs to engage girls, boys, parents, and community leaders in open discussions about human sexuality and preventing early pregnancy.
Some counties are placing special emphasis on the role of men, boys, and faith leaders. For instance, Kilifi County is rolling out an interfaith health hub project that brings together religious leaders across denominations to challenge harmful gender norms and spearhead sexual health education.

Meanwhile, in Kisumu County, Senator Catherine Mumma is leading a campaign against both teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence, urging men and boys to take responsibility.
In Nakuru County, health officials have conducted a multi-sectoral stakeholders’ forum titled Ending Teenage Pregnancy in Nakuru.
The county is expanding access to adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health services — including youth-friendly centres for contraception, STI testing, and mental health — and working with partners like USAID’s Binti Shujaa Model to support pregnant adolescents.
