Homa Bay Residents Voice Concern Over Rising Insecurity, Plead for Heightened Police Patrols
A growing wave of insecurity is causing alarm among residents in various parts of Homa Bay County, with communities reporting an increase in armed robberies and violent attacks. The most affected areas include Kobala, Ringa, and parts of Homa Bay Town, where locals say criminal gangs are staging brazen assaults on homes and businesses, often under the cover of darkness.
According to numerous accounts, the criminals, often armed with pangas, knives, and in some cases firearms, target households and shops, stealing money, electronics, and livestock. The attacks have not only resulted in significant financial losses but have also left victims with physical injuries and deep psychological trauma. We cannot sleep peacefully. Every night we live in fear that our homes will be the next target. We are pleading with the government to hear our cry and send more police to patrol our area, stated a resident from Kobala location.
The surge in crime has prompted urgent appeals from local leaders and members of the public for the county security team to take immediate action. They are specifically calling for increased day and night patrols by the National Police Service and the Administration Police to deter criminal activity and provide a faster response to distress calls. The community’s frustration is compounded by a perception that the current police presence is insufficient to counter the well-organized criminal gangs operating in the region.
This public outcry adds to the mounting security challenges in Homa Bay, which has recently seen high-profile operations against illicit brews and drug trafficking. The situation underscores the critical need for a sustained and visible security strategy that addresses both the symptom of violent crime and its root causes. As the calls for help grow louder, the ability of security agencies to effectively deploy resources and restore a sense of safety will be crucial for the social and economic well-being of the county’s residents.
