Commissioner Lotiatia denies cases of insecurity in Narok

by KenyaPolls

Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia has strongly refuted recent reports suggesting a surge in insecurity in parts of Narok, particularly in Trans Mara South and West sub‑counties. Speaking at his office alongside the County Security Team, Lotiatia called out what he dubbed fake news circulating on social media and in mainstream media that have stirred unnecessary tension in areas such as Enosein and Ongata Barikoi. He emphasized that his own visits to the affected communities, inclusive of peace barazas, revealed that residents described their locales as calm and orderly.
While Lotiatia did confirm the arrest of 27 individuals in those regions—some found in possession of machetes, arrows, and other weapons—he insisted there were no verified reports of fatal skirmishes.

He challenged the authenticity of images circulating online showing people allegedly wounded by arrows, noting that no police or hospital records back them up. The commissioner also attributed a recent handful of murders in the county to social issues like alcoholism, infidelity, and gender-based violence, rather than broader political or ethnic conflict.
The assurances have drawn a cautious response. Some local elders and Nyumba Kumi representatives have joined Lotiatia in calling for restraint, urging residents not to be swayed by alarmist narratives that could stunt investment and development in Narok.
Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki reaffirmed his confidence in Narok’s revamped security team, saying the government is intent on resolving lingering conflict, particularly in volatile regions.
Looking ahead, Lotiatia and the County Security Team are pushing for a two‑pronged strategy: strengthening law enforcement on the ground while also building local frameworks for peace. He has called on residents to report land disputes or livestock theft to authorities instead of resorting to vigilantism.

At the same time, peace committees are being mobilized to sustain community dialogue. Should these measures succeed, officials hope to defuse tensions and prevent misinformation from fuelling future unrest.
