A 32-year-old Canadian citizen has been formally charged with terrorism and several related offenses following a violent machete incident at Masjid Westlands mosque in Nairobi.
The suspect, identified as Mohamed Abdul Mohamed, appeared before Kahawa Law Courts on April 2, 2026, entering a plea of not guilty to all accusations. He confronts nine charges, including terrorism offenses, assault, causing bodily harm, possession of counterfeit currency, and illegal presence in the country.
The court mandated his detention at Kamiti Maximum Prison as further proceedings are awaited. The case has been set for mention on April 13, 2026, when a pre-bail report is anticipated.
Investigation reports indicate the suspect allegedly perpetrated the attack on February 28, 2026, approximately at 6:00am. It is claimed that he entered the mosque disguised as a worshiper attending Fajr prayers. Upon entering, he supposedly secured the main entrance before brandishing a machete and attacking congregants, resulting in injuries to at least five individuals.
Police officers from Kenya Police Service stationed at Kileleshwa Police station promptly responded, apprehending the suspect at the location and seizing the weapon suspected to have been used in the assault. The injured victims were transported to various hospitals across Nairobi County for medical treatment.
A multi-agency investigation led by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kilimani, in cooperation with the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), has since uncovered critical details concerning the incident. The investigation included forensic examination of the crime scene, analysis of CCTV footage, and inspection of the suspect’s mobile phone.
Authorities also verified the suspect’s immigration status and coordinated with Canadian counterparts as part of comprehensive background checks.
Further investigations revealed that the assailant arrived at the mosque in a black Toyota Harrier, which was later discovered at the location. A subsequent search of his residence in Nairobi’s Riverside area yielded additional evidence pertinent to the case.
