Raila Odinga’s Death Sparks Uncertainty in ODM: Caleb Amisi Voices Concern
Nairobi — The passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has left the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) at a critical crossroads, raising questions about the party’s leadership and future political direction ahead of the 2027 elections. While ODM’s central management committee, led by Interim Party Leader Oburu Oginga, resolved to continue collaborating with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government, dissenting voices within the party have emerged.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, a vocal critic of ODM’s current trajectory, expressed doubts about the party’s survival without Raila. ODM has no preferred leader other than Raila Odinga at the moment… None of them understands the struggles and principles that Mzee stood for, Amisi told TUKO.co.ke. He argued that the current leadership lacks the tolerance and vision Raila exercised and warned that leaving the party under a single leader could lead to its decline.
Amisi proposed forming a council of veteran ODM figures—such as governors Anyang Nyong’o, James Orengo, and Ochillo Ayacko—to guide the party in line with Raila’s legacy. He emphasized the need for national representation in decision-making to preserve the party’s founding ideals.
Despite internal tensions, ODM leadership confirmed it would continue supporting President Ruto while maintaining Oburu Oginga as interim leader until formal elections are held. The party now faces the dual challenge of honoring Raila’s legacy while preparing for the 2027 elections amid emerging rifts between pro-government and reformist factions.
