Cabinet approves dualling of the Muthaiga–Kiambu-Ndumberi road to ease traffic congestion

The Kenyan Cabinet has given the green light for the dualling of the Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi road, a major corridor linking Nairobi and Kiambu County. The 23.5-kilometre project is aimed at easing persistent traffic congestion that has long plagued motorists along this busy stretch, which serves residential areas such as Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town. According to the Cabinet brief released Tuesday, the new dual carriageway will include bypasses, loops, and service lanes designed to boost traffic flow and cut travel time between the two counties.
The expansion forms part of the national government’s broader plan to modernize transport infrastructure within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area under Vision 2030. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) confirmed that the project will transform the existing two-lane highway into a four-lane dual road complete with pedestrian footbridges and non-motorised transport lanes. These features are intended to make the route safer for pedestrians and cyclists while improving commuter convenience. KeNHA noted that the works will be undertaken under the Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) model, guided by international FIDIC standards that ensure cost control and timely delivery.
Beyond easing movement, the upgraded road is expected to stimulate economic growth in Kiambu County, one of Kenya’s fastest-urbanizing regions. Improved accessibility will make it easier for residents to connect with Nairobi’s commercial hubs, support real-estate development, and open new opportunities for small businesses. Transport experts believe the project could also reduce vehicle emissions by eliminating long hours of idling in traffic, contributing to cleaner air and environmental sustainability.
Construction of the Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi dual carriageway is set to take 36 months once groundbreaking begins. Authorities have emphasized that community engagement and safety will remain top priorities during implementation. Upon completion, the road is expected to serve as a model for future infrastructure upgrades across the country—linking economic growth, mobility, and sustainable urban planning for Kenya’s expanding metropolitan regions.
