Busia Residents Raise Security Concerns During ‘Jukwaa la Usalama’ Tour
Residents of Busia County have voiced a litany of pressing security concerns during a ‘Jukwaa la Usalama’ (Security Forum) tour conducted by the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO). The forum, which moved through various sub-counties, provided a platform for locals to directly engage security chiefs on issues ranging from cross-border crime and cattle rustling to the proliferation of illicit brews and mugging. The consistent reporting of these problems across different areas highlighted the pervasive nature of the security challenges.

A predominant issue raised was the fear of cross-border criminal gangs who exploit the porous Kenya-Uganda border to commit crimes and escape arrest. Residents also expressed deep concern over the rising consumption of illicit alcohol and drugs among the youth, which they cited as a primary driver of petty crime and social decay. The forums revealed a strong desire for a more visible and proactive police presence, especially in the remote and often neglected border villages.

Led by County Commissioner John Ondego, the security team assured residents that their grievances were being noted for immediate action. The Commissioner announced plans to increase night patrols, establish more police posts in hotspot areas, and intensify the crackdown on drug and alcohol peddlers. The ‘Jukwaa la Usalama’ initiative is part of a broader strategy to decentralize security dialogue, foster public trust, and develop localized solutions to the unique security threats facing the people of Busia.
