Busia ‘Radical Group’ Empowered to Curb Crime Through Rehabilitation
In a unique approach to crime prevention, the national government has partnered with a Busia-based social movement known as the Radical Group to steer youth away from criminal activities and into productive livelihoods. The group, which consists of reformed former criminals, is being empowered to act as agents of change within the community, using their firsthand experience to dissuade others from a life of crime. The initiative focuses on mentorship, rehabilitation, and economic empowerment.

The partnership was formalized during a meeting between the group’s leadership and the County Security Committee. The government, through the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), will support the group’s efforts by facilitating access to vocational training and seed capital for small businesses. This economic component is seen as crucial for providing sustainable alternatives to crime, addressing the idleness and poverty that often drive young people into illicit activities.

County Commissioner John Ondego praised the Radical Group for its commitment to transformation and urged other youth to emulate their example. He emphasized that the government’s strategy is not solely about enforcement but also about redemption and social integration. This collaborative model, which leverages the influence of reformed individuals, is being hailed as a promising strategy for reducing recidivism and fostering lasting peace in Busia County.
