Bungoma County is set to benefit from a major Sh1.8 billion road upgrade, strategically timed ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1. The initiative, overseen by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), has improved over 21 kilometres of roads, including both urban streets and key inter-town links. KURA Director General, Eng. Silas Kinoti, led an inspection tour in Bungoma town, noting that these upgrades are expected to enhance connectivity, stimulate economic activity, and strengthen the town’s role as a key transit hub for goods traveling to Uganda and beyond.
Under the Annuity Road Programme, several major roads have been rehabilitated, including the Bungoma-Mateka-Samoia-Muslim Primary C33 (6.3 km) and the Mateka-Mwanda-Siritanyi A104 (8.4 km). Additionally, over 6.5 km of roads within Bungoma town such as Stadium Roads, Elegant Road, and Kanduyi DEB-Lusaka have been improved to ease urban mobility. Kinoti emphasized that modern road infrastructure plays a vital role in urbanisation, job creation, and improving residents’ living standards while opening access to essential services.
County officials and residents have welcomed the upgrades, highlighting the transformative impact on local businesses and commuter convenience. The improved road network is expected to attract investment and boost trade across Western Kenya while providing safer and faster access for communities in neighboring towns like Kakamega, Vihiga, and Busia. Looking forward, the upgraded roads are a key step toward long-term regional development, ensuring Bungoma continues to serve as a strategic economic and transport hub.
