Bungoma County has earmarked Sh4.4 billion to enhance health and sanitation services for its 1.7 million residents in the financial year 2024-25. The County Assembly approved the Sh15.2 billion annual budget on June 27, 2024, with Sh10.3 billion allocated for recurrent expenditure and Sh4.8 billion for development projects. The budget is supported by an equitable share of Sh11.2 billion from the national government, conditional grants totaling Sh487 million, and an additional Sh1.2 billion from development partners, covering programs such as the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP), KOICA-supported water initiatives, and locally led climate action programs.
The health sector forms a significant portion of the county’s development focus, alongside other key areas like roads, water, agriculture, education, and public administration. Notable allocations include Sh677 million for agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and cooperative development, Sh1.3 billion for roads and public works, and Sh680 million for water and natural resource projects. Specific projects include waste management enhancements, street lighting, drainage improvements, and the construction of a tea factory. The budget also targets increased local revenue generation, with a goal of raising Sh1.1 billion, marking an increase of Sh325 million from the previous year.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka expressed confidence that the budget will significantly improve service delivery, infrastructure, and the overall welfare of Bungoma residents. With an emphasis on development and strategic investment, the county aims to enhance public health, boost economic opportunities, and improve living conditions, especially in informal settlements and rural areas. The approved budget is now awaiting the governor’s assent before implementation at the start of the new financial year, marking a major step toward Bungoma’s socio-economic development.
