Bungoma Allocates Sh80 Million for Community Actions to Fight Climate Change

by KenyaPolls

Bungoma County has taken a major step toward combating the adverse effects of climate change by allocating Sh80 million for community-led resilience initiatives. Speaking at a climate change sensitisation session in Ndengelwa, Kanduyi Constituency, County Climate Change Director Jane Mukonambi revealed that the county will implement the three-year program in partnership with CBM Global Disability Inclusion and the Kenya Red Cross, with funding support from the German government and the World Bank. The initiative is designed to benefit communities across all 45 wards, with a focus on inclusivity for persons with disabilities, youth, and the elderly.
The program emphasizes practical actions to strengthen climate resilience, including the upgrading of boreholes, spring protection, water catchment systems, and drip irrigation. Efforts also cover mulching, fruit tree farming, solarisation of water facilities, and rehabilitation of degraded land through tree planting, aiming to improve agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability. Over 80,000 residents have already been reached through the project, and 290 persons with disabilities have undergone health screenings, with 236 benefiting from assistive services. Mukonambi stressed that community champions trained in each ward will play a central role in educating and mobilizing residents to adopt sustainable practices.
The Bungoma government and its partners envision the project as a model for community-driven climate action that combines environmental conservation with social empowerment. County officials highlighted that the initiative will not only mitigate the effects of climate change but also enhance livelihoods, improve water security, and strengthen the capacity of vulnerable groups. With the continued support of international donors and local stakeholders, Bungoma is positioning itself as a leading county in inclusive and sustainable climate resilience efforts in Kenya.
