Kenyan fintech company, Ledger Afrika, is piloting a blockchain-based platform aimed at bringing transparency to sports betting winnings and grassroots sports sponsorships. The system creates smart contracts that automatically release funds to winners or sponsored teams once pre-set conditions are verified, auditable on a public ledger. This tackles the perennial issue of delayed prize payments and ensures sponsorship money reaches its intended destination, explained Ledger Afrika CEO Wangechi Muriuki. The pilot is being tested with five minor football leagues and two betting companies.
