Bhang worth Sh5 million seized in university hostels in Homa Bay

On September 11, 2025, a multi-agency NACADA operation uncovered bhang worth Sh5 million in university student hostels in Homa Bay County. The raid involved the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), and a specialised Administration Police unit.

Alongside the bhang, officers recovered assorted cigarettes valued at about Sh100,000. Two suspects were arrested during the operation.

NACADA CEO Anthony Omerikwa warned drug traffickers exploiting students, stressing that universities should remain safe spaces for learning. The operation is part of a nationwide crackdown on narcotics near educational institutions, following a NACADA report showing that over 30% of university students admitted to using cannabis, and nearly 40% regularly use alcohol and tobacco.

Authorities assured continued surveillance and urged the public to report suspicious activity to prevent further drug abuse among young people.
