Athletics Kenya Introduces Eco-Certified Race Standard

Athletics Kenya launched the Green Race Certification on June 28, 2025—rating events on waste, transport, energy, and community impact. Races earn Bronze (60%), Silver (75%), or Gold (90%) status. The Nairobi Marathon achieved Gold, with 98% waste recycled, electric lead vehicles, and tree-planting finish lines. Sustainability isn’t optional—it’s part of the course, said AK Environmental Officer Dr. Lydia Wanjala. Certified races get priority for international calendars. World Athletics adopted the framework for its Event Standards. Over 42 local races applied in Q3 2025.
