Homa Bay to Launch $5 Million Multifruit Processing Plant, Creating 10,200 Jobs
Homa Bay, Kenya
Homa Bay County is set to transform its horticultural sector with the launch of a $5 million multifruit processing plant, aimed at adding value to locally grown fruits and boosting the county’s economic prospects. The facility will process pineapples, mangoes, tomatoes, watermelons, oranges, and guavas into juice concentrates, purees, and jams. The plant is expected to double the county’s fruit output within two years, reducing post-harvest losses and meeting the demands of over 50 million Kenyan consumers.
The project, spearheaded by the Homa Bay County Government, will feature modern infrastructure including bulk storage, extraction lines, and sterilization systems to ensure efficiency and product quality. Officials say the facility will create 200 direct jobs in production and management, while generating approximately 10,000 indirect employment opportunities through associated supply chains such as farming, logistics, and marketing. Farmers will also benefit from support in modern irrigation techniques, mechanization, and certified seeds, increasing productivity and improving livelihoods.
With Kenya’s horticultural subsector growing at 15–20% annually, the Homa Bay initiative is positioned to strengthen local agro-processing, enhance food security, and stimulate regional economic growth. By repurposing by-products for sustainability and positioning the county as a hub for fruit processing, the project aligns with national priorities to promote value addition in agriculture. Investors are invited to participate through equity investment or public-private partnerships, with the county offering strategic advantages including proximity to raw materials and an established supply base.
