Speaker Moses Masika Wetang’ula announced that the African Development Bank (ADB) has released Kshs. 8 billion to fund the upgrading of Bungoma County Referral Hospital to a Level Six medical facility. The funding follows Cabinet approval for the hospital’s elevation and aims to significantly enhance healthcare services in the region.
Once completed, the upgraded hospital will receive direct government funding and offer specialized medical services on par with other Level Six hospitals nationwide. Additionally, Bungoma Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) will benefit from infrastructure development and new academic programs, improving training for medical professionals.
As part of broader county development plans, 30 acres of the Bungoma airstrip land will be transferred to the county for the construction of a smart city, following directives from President Dr. William Ruto. Meanwhile, the Matulo Airstrip will undergo major expansion with Kshs. 100 million allocated—half from the National Treasury and half from the county government.
Speaker Wetang’ula also confirmed that road construction projects, previously stalled due to funding, will resume, supported by Kshs. 8.5 billion from the National Treasury. These initiatives are part of his long-term vision to transform Bungoma Town into a modern city.
He cautioned against political interference from a few Members of Parliament but expressed confidence that progress for the people of Bungoma will continue. The announcement was made during the funeral of the late Mama Juliana Nakhumicha Osyanju, attended by notable leaders including Governor Kenneth Lusaka and several MPs.
This development marks a major milestone in Bungoma’s health and infrastructure sector, promising better medical services, improved training for healthcare workers, and enhanced urban development.
