Murang’a County approves Sh. 11 Billion budget

by KenyaPolls

Murang’a County Assembly has unanimously approved a Sh11.71 billion budget for the 2025/2026 financial year, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s Sh10.46 billion allocation. The Appropriation Bill, tabled by Budget and Appropriations Committee Chairperson Charles Machigo, outlines Sh7.88 billion for recurrent expenditure and Sh3.83 billion for development projects. Machigo, who also represents Murang’a Township Ward, stressed the need for fiscal discipline and transparency, noting that prudent use of public resources is essential for improving residents’ lives.
The budget aligns with the third phase of implementing the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) 2023–2027, with key sectors receiving substantial allocations. The health and sanitation department received the largest share at Sh3.8 billion, followed by the energy, transport and roads department with Sh1.46 billion. Other significant allocations include Sh1.43 billion for public service administration and ICT, and Sh718.9 million for education and technical training. The County Assembly itself was allocated Sh846.7 million, with Sh30 million earmarked for development activities. During the debate, nominated MCA Sharleen Wambui lauded the estimates, saying they accurately reflect the priority needs of Murang’a residents and, if well executed, will uplift socio-economic standards.
Some MCAs, however, pushed for further amendments to address emerging needs. Kiru MCA Moris Gathoni urged the budget committee to double the market development allocation to Sh6 million to upgrade Kirwara and Kiria-ini markets and requested Sh20 million to boost coffee factory development in the county’s leading coffee belt. Other ward representatives expressed concerns over limited funding for sports, entertainment, and youth recreation, warning that Murang’a risks lagging behind other counties that are investing heavily in such programmes. Despite the concerns, most members expressed confidence that the approved budget will enhance accountability, strengthen resource allocation, and deliver better public services for the people of Murang’a.
