The government has announced that 99 percent of Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) classrooms planned for the Central Region have now been completed, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s ongoing education reforms. Central Region Education Director, Sabina Aroni, revealed that out of 1,631 classrooms earmarked for construction across Nyeri, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nyandarua counties, 1,600 have been finalized. The remaining classrooms are delayed primarily due to logistical challenges, including limited land availability in some schools.

Aroni cited Mwiki Primary School in Kiambu as a prime example, where the institution had to build multi-story classrooms to accommodate its large student population of 5,000. The Ministry of Education had previously announced plans to construct 11,000 classrooms for Junior School learners, with funding support from both development partners and the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF). Officials have also emphasized that preparations for Grade 10 are underway, with teachers undergoing retooling programmes through the Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), and textbooks already being allocated based on enrolment data.

The Ministry also addressed capitation payments, clarifying that schools which submitted verifiable student data have already received funding. Basic Education Principal Secretary, Julius Bitok, confirmed that 32,000 schools submitted their records, with 3,000 schools receiving their Third Term capitation. While some schools are yet to receive funds, officials urged patience as verification continues to ensure accuracy. With classroom construction nearly complete and teacher preparedness in full swing, Central Region is set to welcome Grade 10 learners under improved learning conditions, reflecting Kenya’s commitment to enhancing quality and access to education nationwide.
